11 Google Image Search Optimization Tips

Each SEO Expert optimizes his website trying to rank higher in Google Search Results, but many of them are missing a great opportunity to drive in free huge traffic to their websites from Google Image Search!

Top 11 Tips
To Optimize Your Images
For Google Image Search (http://images.google.com):

  1. Alt Tag: Alt Tag makes the search engine spiders understand / recognize the images. Always make sure you add a relevant alternate name for your images. These Alternate Tags will be displayed on the search engine result pages instead of the file names.
    Example: <img src=”http://www.seo4experts.com/download/google_image_search_optimization_tips.jpg” alt=”google_image_search_optimization_tips” />

  2. SEO Friendly File Names: For better image search engine rankings remember to use either a hyphen or an underscore instead of spaces in your file names.

  3. Optimized File Names: Use your targeted keywords in your file names - give your image a better file name rather the ones which are automatically generated by digital cameras. If your image name is DSC45s8874.jpg, there is no use and no sense in it for either people or search engines. You should better rename to for example something like this: google_image_search_optimization_tips.jpg.

  4. Image Placement: To improve your both On-Page Optimization & Image Optimiation, add your images within the relevant text and targeted keyword phrases! If you want to improve your image rankings in Google Image Search Results even more, then you would need to test & play a while with your image placement, alternate tags, targeted keywords on the page, and your article title.

  5. Text Backlinks: Same as in link building (Link Building Tips), of course you need to link to your images (OR to your page with that image on it) using your targeted keywords in the anchor text. Linking to an image or a page with text like "Google Image Optimiation" will give more wieght to that image and/or images placed on that page and improve its rankings in Google Image Search Results.

  6. Use Relevant Images: Another Image Optimizing Tip is to add an image of relevant category if completely relevant image is not present. In the case you have an article called "11 The Most Important Rules in NEW Website PromotionCreating a new page. New page name: website_promotion_rules. New page title: 11 The Most Important Rules in NEW Website Promotion" and you can't find or create any image on this topic, you can add some images related to Google, Yahoo, MSN, Search Engine Optimization or Rankings Improve in general since they are still related to your article's theme. And this will help your page to rank better for "Important Rules in NEW Website Promotion" in Google Image Search.

  7. Track Your Images Search Results: Keep tracking your already indexed images using the site search operator like http://images.google.com/images?q=site:seo4experts.com and keep checking the total count regularly with the text/image description on the search pages. This way you can know whether you are correctly optimizing your website images or not.

  8. Use Google Image Labeler: Use http://images.google.com/imagelabeler/ to help Google know more about your image and get it indexed quickly. You normally play this like a game with another random partner online and both of you try to suggest tags for random images and the matching tags are taken into consideration by google as search keywords. You can login to Google Webmaster Central (www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/) and use the Enhanced Image Search (www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=48367&hl=en) feature to suggest your own images and get quickly indexed in the search engines.

  9. Look For Low Competitive & Popular Niches: Try to find/get/create & optimize your website for those images which you think are least competitive & most popular. This great Backlink Checker (or Competitor Analyser or Competition Research Tool) will help you to find the least competitive niches, whereas this Keyword Popularity Checker will help you to determine keyword popularity!

  10. SEO Friendly Is A Must: Make your image folder available to the search engines and make sure you are not blocking your image files or folder using your robots.txt file or anywhere else. (This option can completely make you lose your rankings in the Google Image Search.) Also, remember to build some backlinks to your images! Link Building Tips. Link Building Services.

  11. Make Your Images Unique: In the case you are using a duplicate image (for instance you've taken it from some other website), resize it, rename it and change its alternate tag. Doing so will make your image look unique for search engines and your image will bring to your website much more traffic! (To resize an image you need to use some image editor software like Photoshop or ACDSEE.)

Bottom Line:

If you implement all of the above mentioned 11 Google Image Search Optimization Tips, we are sure you will get a huge traffic increase in search engines. Try to experiment with all these options and always monitor all your results from your statcounter or analytics (http://www.google.com/analytics/) panel.
