How To Choose The Right Keywords
Recommendations prepared by the best SEO experts of Neenco SEO Company.
Which keywords should I target? How many keywords should I target? Which URLs should I target? How many links should I build per keyword for each URL? Why should I regularly adjust the keywords during link building campaigns? And the most important: How To Get The Most Effect From Your Link Building Campaign?
Which Keywords to Use?
To help you choose the right keywords, we recommend you to use the following 2 tools (please post your questions regarding tools usage on our SEO Tools Forum):
- Free Keyword Research Tool to:
- enlarge your targeted keyword list;
- find the least competitive, but popular keywords;
- find niches without competition at all;
- get keyword suggestions in general.
- Free Google Keyword Tracker to check your website current rankings on Google before your Link Building Campaign initiation, and to track your website rankings changes during your Link Building Campaign performance. This tool allows tracking in Google.com, Google.co.uk, and in any other Google.
Please check your website current rankings on Google. We recommend you to choose those keywords for which your website already has at least some positions through the first 200 search results. Doing so will save you time and money and will allow you to start receiving traffic for these keywords sooner than, for example, in case if you choose keywords for which your site has no rankings at all yet.
We believe that described below scheme of choosing keywords is the most effective & the most profitable in terms of ROI.
- When we promote our own websites, we always focus on building new links for those keywords, for which our website is on the 2nd and 3rd pages of Google search results.
- If we have no rankings on 2nd and 3rd pages, then we choose keywords from the 1st page, starting from position #10 and above till #5.
- If we have no rankings on 2nd and 3rd pages, and on the 1st page we only have keywords in Top 3 – Top 5, then we choose keywords from 4th, 5th, 6th pages, and so on.
For example, if our site has the following rankings for some keywords: #3, #6, #10, #11, #12, #34, #45, #109, then at first we will build links for keyword which ranks #11, then #12, then #10, then #34, then #45, then #6 and then #109.
- Adjust your targeted keywords each 2 weeks. For example, at first build links for 1 group of keywords, in 2 weeks build links for another group of keywords. In 2 more weeks we recommend you to build links for 3rd group of keywords, but if you don't target so many keywords, then build links for the 1st group again. This adjustments are necessary for your link building campaign to look natural for Google.
Why do we recommend doing so?
- The thing is most traffic from Google is spread between Top 10 websites from search results (1st page), so 2nd page gets almost no traffic at all.
- Competition between the first 10 positions is the highest, whereas competition between 11th and 10th positions is usually lower. So number of links necessary to be built for position #11 to get to #10 is usually much lower than number of links necessary to be built for position #10 to get to #9.
Bottom line: all this means that investments in keywords which rank on 2nd and 3rd pages of Google SERPs are the most profitable in terms of ROI.
Note: of course while choosing keywords, you should also consider profitableness of each keyword, but not only its position on Google.
We also recommend you to use our Keyword Tracker Tool during your entire website promotion in order:
- To see the progress and effectiveness of each campaign.
- To adjust targeted keywords for each next campaign based on the scheme proposed above.
Note: these adjustments should be done only by you since nobody else knows your business better than you. So you will choose the best keywords in terms of profitableness for your business.
How Many Keywords to Use?
We recommend you to target each page for 3-5 keywords, and to create different pages for all other keywords. Targeting each page for its own not many keywords has several benefits:
- SEO benefit - focusing yields better rankings improve.
- Marketing benefit - focusing yields more leads.
We have written more detailed article which answers the question How Many Keywords To Use In Backlinks? We strongly recommend you to take a look at it and consider our recommendations.
Which URLs to Target?
If you have important inner pages (subpages) on your website, then we recommend you to target not only homepage, but also some inner pages of your site. Building links to many pages of your website makes your Link Building Campaign look more natural to search engines, and especially to Google. Thus, in the long run using many URLs (as well as many keywords) will yield better results.
How Many Links to Build Per Keyword & URL?
We recommend you to build minimum 15 links per keyword - maximum 100. Too little number of links may not yield serious rankings improve on Google, whereas too many links built with the same keyword may look unnatural to Google.
Do you have any questions? Please post them on our SEO Forum.
We wish you quickly and significant rankings boost for all of your targeted keywords!
