Goal of experiment: to prove truthfulness of the following SEO article: The Worst SEO Lie Ever!. To prove that this number keyword_competition_research absolutely does NOT show keyword competition level.

Task of experiment: to get any page of our own website to the Top10 Google search results for one of the following keywords:

* NOTE: These numbers were written down by me on 25-th of March, 2008. They show total number of pages on the Internet containing a searched keyword. These numbers always grow. And they always grow not because the competition is growing, but just because thousands of new pages are created daily! (So don't be surprised if these numbers are already different for you.)

**Question:
for those of you who really thinks this number keyword_competition_research shows keyword competition: Do you really think these keywords 'Link Building', 'Link Building Service', 'Link Popularity Service'  are least competitive than all above listed keywords?! Please post your reply here

Method

  1. We have created a separate page on our website for each of the above listed keywords.
  2. We have optimized each page for only one keyword. We have optimized all pages in the same way (we've used the same on-page & off-page optimization). We have built no inbound backlinks to any of these pages. This can be easily checked with the help of our free Backlink Checker Tool which finds all backlinks a webpage has. We have built the same number of inner links to each of these pages (we've built just a few links in order Google indexed them); this can also be checked with the help of our Backlink Checker. We have built inner links from the same pages (in order each page received the same weight).
  3. Now we are waiting for Google to index all the pages. From time to time we check rankings changes of all pages through the first 200 search results of Google.
  4. In case if once all pages are indexed by Google none of them gets in Top10 Google search results, we’ll build several inbound backlinks to each page and see what happens. (We'll build the same number of inner backlinks and from the same pages in order each page received the same weight.)

FAQ

*What does this number keyword_competition_research really shows?

This number only shows how many pages there are on the Internet with your keyword on them. And if a page has your keyword on it, it absolutely does not mean the owner of that website promotes his page for that keyword! It also absolutely does not mean all those pages have backlinks with this keyword in the anchor text to their sites. And if they don't, they are not your competitors! Moreover, since off-page optimization factor is much more important than on-page optimization, if you build just a few links with that keyword to your site, you'll easily outrank all those sites! (Since they have no backlinks with this keyword in the anchor text.) Still don't believe me? Then check out this SEO experiment.

So how should you actually determine your keyword competition?

For this purpose we've developed a free SEO Tool called Backlink Checker Tool. Find out more about How Keyword Competition Research Should Be Done?
